Brony James is the latest top 50 player in the 2023 high school class to make his college decision.
Looks like we won’t have to wait much longer.
Luca Evans from Los Angeles Times reported that James has narrowed his choices to Ohio State, USC and Oregon and will make a final decision at the end of the Sierra Canyon season.
All three schools are clearly a good fit, albeit for different reasons. Ohio State will allow Broney to create the collegiate legacy his father never did by returning to his home state to play for the Buckeyes. LeBron James has said many times that he would have attended Ohio State if he had been forced to play a year of college basketball before entering the NBA.
The Los Angeles Lakers star recently told Dan Walk Los Angeles Times that he feels like an “honorary” graduate of Ohio State.
USC will allow Bronie James to stay home in Los Angeles while playing college basketball, giving him the advantage of high-level basketball and the comfort. The James family has spent almost all of their time in Los Angeles since LeBron signed with the Lakers in 2018 and split his time between Los Angeles and Ohio during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
If Bronny wants to stay close to his family, USC should be considered the favorite.
Oregon, however, is an interesting wild card that may have the biggest trump card of all: Nike’s money. Bronie James signed a NIL deal with Nike last October, and Oregon counts Nike founder Phil Knight as its biggest incentive. If Brony wants to forge his own path from his college experience, he could choose Oregon to expand his horizons outside of home (while staying on the West Coast) and avoid the potential shadow that LeBron casts on Ohio basketball history.
Ohio State and USC also have apparel deals with Nike.
Brony James is the No. 36 player in the class of 2023, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
