Russian forces shelled Zaporozhye more than 160 times in the past day as they launched a new offensive in the region.
The Russian army said on Saturday that its troops had been conducting “offensive operations” in the region and claimed to have “taken more advantageous lines and positions”.
It comes as fighting intensified there this week after several months on a mostly frozen front.
Alexander Starukh, the region’s governor, said Russian forces launched more than 160 shellings overnight in 21 towns, killing one woman and wounding two others.
“The enemy is strengthening regime measures in the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporozhye region,” he said.
“Over the past 24 hours, Russian shells have covered 21 towns and villages in the Zaporozhye region. Our communities survived 166 shellings. Another 18 destroyed houses were added to the register.”
