Alec Baldwin will continue filming Rust as he faces manslaughter charges in the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Melina Spadone, an attorney for the western’s production, confirmed the news Friday to CNN, adding that “safety supervisors on set and union crew members … will prohibit the use of working weapons or any ammunition.”
Mr. Baldwin is one of three actors and crew members facing charges in the accidental shooting, prosecutors in New Mexico announced Thursday. The gunman, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, is also charged with manslaughter, while first assistant director David Halls agreed to plead guilty to negligent use of a deadly weapon.
A person familiar with the film previously told The New York Times that Baldwin will still star in the film, and Joel Souza, who was injured in the shooting, will return as director.
Thursday’s ruling comes more than 15 months after the fatal shooting in October 2021, when a gun held by Baldwin went off on set. A single bullet struck Souza in the shoulder before fatally striking Hutchins in the chest.
Baldwin has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and claimed he was told the gun was “cold.”

Father of cameraman killed on set in 2014 hopes for change in industry
The father of Sarah Jones, a cameraman who was killed on the set of the 2014 film Midnight Rider, spoke to The Independent’s Bevan Hurley.
Richard Jones and his wife, Elizabeth, created the non-profit organization, Safety for Sarah, to educate young filmmakers about the importance of following proper set protocols with the mantra, “Never forget, never again.”
Mr Jones told The Independent that the shooting of Halyna Hutchins brought back the pain he felt after his daughter’s death.
“There needs to be accountability for this tragedy and I’m glad to see that work is being done to hold people accountable,” he told The Independent.
“Clearly, as with my daughter Sarah’s death, there is a chain of events that took place. If any of these professionals had done their job properly, it would have prevented this tragedy.

In 2021, a gun used as a prop by actor Alec Baldwin went off on the set of Rust, killing the film’s cinematographer Halina Hutchins and injuring its director Joel Souza.
Since then, authorities have been investigating to determine how a live bullet entered the gun used by the 64-year-old actor, why crew members who inspected it on set did not notice it and why the gun was fired.
The actor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in the shooting.

Who is Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, the gunman accused of shooting Rust on set?
Hannah Gutierrez-Reid is the gunman who also faces manslaughter charges in the October 2021 fatal shooting in Rust.
As the head gunner on set, Gutierrez-Reid’s job was to “tune” the guns. She was the crew member who placed the firearm on the cart, which discharged after Baldwin picked it up, firing the bullet that fatally shot Halina Hutchins.
The 24-year-old is the daughter of Hollywood gunslinger Tell Reid. Reid is well known in the industry for teaching Brad Pitt and Val Kilmer “realistic gun handling”. He also worked on Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film Django Unchained as a speed drawing expert.
Reed reportedly coached Gutierrez-Reed, who revealed on a recent episode of the Voices of the West podcast that Rust is only her second film as the lead gunslinger. She recently finished shooting her first film – The Old Way (2023) starring Nicolas Cage.

Prosecutors are seeking justice in Alec Baldwin’s case, fame notwithstanding
Prosecutors have promised to file those charges before February against actor and weapons expert Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, 64, in the October 2021 fatal shooting of a cameraman on the set of the western movie “Rust.”
Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Althuis says the case is about equal justice under the law and accountability for the death of Halina Hutchins, regardless of the fame or wealth of those involved.
She says the Ukrainian-born cinematographer’s death while rehearsing a scene was tragic and preventable.
Mr. Baldwin and Ms. Gutierrez-Reed have maintained their innocence and vowed to fight the charges, which were announced Thursday.

Who is accused of murdering Halina Hutchins of Rust?
After an exhaustive investigation that lasted more than 15 months, Alec Baldwin and two others were charged in the fatal shooting of cameraman Halina Hutchins on the set of Rust.
Mary Carmack-Althuis, the district attorney for New Mexico’s First Judicial District, announced the charges Thursday.
Baldwin and the film’s gunman, Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, will be charged with manslaughter, while first assistant director David Halls has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Charges will be filed by the end of the month, Ms. Carmack-Althuis said in a statement.

On Thursday (January 19), authorities in New Mexico announced that they will charge Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter. It follows the death of Halina Hutchins, a cameraman who was working on the set of Western Rust, when the gun Baldwin was holding went off, fatally wounding Hutchins.
“The question here, as the authorities put it, is one of responsibility, not intent,” Clemence Michalon wrote for The Independent.
“Manslaughter is generally defined in New Mexico law as either “murder committed in the commission of an unlawful act not constituting a felony” or “in the commission of a lawful act likely to cause death in an unlawful manner or without due care and caution.”

Mickey Rourke Says There’s No Way In Hell Alec Baldwin Will Be Charged In Halina Hutchins’ Death
Mickey Rourke has spoken out in defense of Alec Baldwin, saying there is “no way in hell” he should face charges in the death of Halina Hutchins.
Responding to the news on Instagram, Rourke wrote: “I usually never put in my two cents about what happens on someone’s set. What happened to cameraman Halina Hutchins is a terrible tragedy. But in no way should actor Alec Baldwin be accused of any negligence.
