Southern Ontario is about to be hit by a significant winter storm this week, with “rapidly accumulating snow” expected to make travel difficult.
Environment Canada is predicting periods of snow starting as early as Sunday evening, with about two centimeters falling over the city of Toronto.
There is a 30 percent chance of winds Monday morning, with a 40 percent chance of winds Tuesday.
“There’s a low pressure system that looks like it’s going to form across Texas and move toward Ontario throughout the week,” said CTV News Toronto weather anchor Jessica Smith.
“It will pick up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday and right now it looks like it will affect areas around Windsor Wednesday morning, make its way into the GTA by early afternoon and affect the evening commute.”
HEAVY SNOW WILL FALL ON WEDNESDAY
According to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada on Sunday, 10 to 15 centimeters of snow is possible by late Wednesday night. More snow is also expected on Thursday morning.
The agency warned that snowfall amounts could reach up to 20 centimeters in certain municipalities. Reduced visibility is possible due to heavy snow.
“People should plan ahead when it comes to their travel plans, including any possible transit delays due to weather,” Smith added.
The National Weather Service said temperatures will remain relatively stable throughout the week despite the rain.
On Monday, Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 3C, a wind chill of minus 7C.
