A powerful winter storm is moving through New England on Monday, bringing up to 6 inches of snow to the upper reaches of Massachusetts and up to a foot of snow in parts of New Hampshire, forecasters said.
Heavy rain is expected to turn to snow early Monday afternoon in eastern and northeastern Massachusetts — including Boston — where forecasters expect total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches by 9 p.m. and wind gusts of up to 35 mph, according to the National weather service Service.
In Hampden and eastern Hampshire counties, forecasters expect total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches by 5 p.m. and “light icing ice accumulations,” according to the weather service.

Late afternoon snow could complicate evening travel, forecasters warned.
Snow will fall across most of Massachusetts — except for some parts of Cape Cod, where it will still rain — by 4 p.m.
Forecasters warned that motorists should expect snowy roads and a “slick” commute during the day and encouraged anyone traveling on the roads to slow down and take care while driving.

In central, northern and southern New Hampshire, forecasters said heavy snow was expected by 10 p.m. Monday night, with snow totals of 7 to 10 inches or more possible in some areas. Local travel conditions could be “extremely dangerous”, they said.
“Persistent moderate snow” and “low visibility” will be the biggest impacts, the Met Office said.
“Bandy snow showers are likely throughout the day today, leading to periods of heavy snowfall leading to rapidly accumulating snow and extremely hazardous travel conditions,” forecasters warned.
