A Penticton resident’s birthday got off to a terrible start on Sunday.

Roxanne Brower says she woke up at 2 a.m. to let her cat use the toilet and heard what she thought was a cat fight, only to find her pet in the cougar’s mouth.

Brower says he lives on Duncan Avenue East.

She tells Castanet that she called out to the cougar and then she dropped her cat.

“He ran across the road to the water tank and my kitty decided to lie down in the driveway and I went in and grabbed a towel and it took him 30 minutes to breathe.”

The cat named Kitty was 14 years old.

“I’m so thankful I was able to separate it and keep it, otherwise we wouldn’t have known where it was. It was an incredibly huge animal,” Brower added.

Brower says the cougar had been spotted in the area for several weeks.

She hopes her story can remind pet owners to be careful late at night.

“I want to make sure everyone is aware.”
