Seaforth Emergency Department closure due to COVID-19 outbreak

From February 1, Seaforth’s emergency department will be closed at night.

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance said that due to “sudden healthcare staffing shortages related to COVID-19”, the emergency department at Seaforth Community Hospital will be closed from 5pm to 7am, from February 1 to February 6 , when regular business hours are expected to resume.

On January 28, an outbreak of COVID-19 was declared at Seaforth’s inpatient unit, closing all admissions to the unit. On Tuesday, an outbreak of COVID-19 was declared at Clinton General Hospital’s inpatient unit, which also closed it to admissions.

A total of 10 people are in Huron-Perth hospitals dealing with COVID-19.

Two long-term care homes in the region are also dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19 right now. Since Jan. 1, eight Huron-Perth residents, most of them over the age of 75, have died due to COVID-19, according to the Huron Perth Health Department.

“My condolences go out to the families of these people,” said Dr. Miriam Klassen, medical officer of health at Huron Perth Health Unit.

She added: “Covid-19 remains a serious illness for some people, especially the elderly. While we are seeing signs of improvement, it is important that we continue to take action to protect those most vulnerable to severe outcomes from this virus.
