Sony is reportedly halving shipments of the PlayStation VR2 due to disappointing pre-orders

Sony has reduced its planned PlayStation VR2 shipments in response to disappointing pre-order numbers, a new report has revealed.

Bloomberg says Sony has cut its shipment forecast in half — to 1 million units instead of 2 million — after weak early interest. The company now reportedly expects to ship just 1.5 million handsets in total before March 2024.

PSVR2 will arrive on February 22nd with 37 games, although the majority are not new experiences. The cost of the headset has also raised some eyebrows, coming in at over £1,000 in total combined with the regular PS5 – and that’s without a game to play on it.

Eurogamer goes hands-on with PlayStation VR2.

Of the 37 titles available at launch, most will be familiar to existing VR fans. The list includes the charming mouse adventure Moss and its sequel, the brilliant puzzle classic Tetris Effect Connected and a VR-enabled version of Gran Turismo 7.

Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, one of the few PSVR2 exclusive titles, was recently pushed back a few weeks and will now arrive on March 16th. It’s a spiritual successor to the roller coaster-like Supermassive Rush of Blood for the original PSVR and one of the most engaging titles in the PSVR2 lineup.

Sony previously priced the PSVR2 at £530/$550/€600, or alternatively £570/$600/€650 bundled with the company’s own launch game Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Separately, you can pay £40, $50 or €50 extra for the PSVR2 Controller Charging Dock, which lets you charge your controllers without connecting them to your PS5.

Sony has yet to comment on today’s shipping report.
