War in Ukraine: A dog that smells mines, which has saved hundreds of lives, receives a Ukrainian medal of honor | World news

The blasting dog, which is credited with discovering more than 200 explosives in the Ukrainian war, has been recognized for its bravery.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky described Patron, a pint-sized Jack Russell Terrier, as a “wonderful little sapper” (military engineer).

And on Sunday, Patron – whose work has prevented countless injuries and deaths and who has become a canine symbol of Ukrainian patriotism – was awarded a medal in recognition of his devotion.

Mr Zelenski presented the award at a press conference in Kyiv with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Patron barked and wagged his tail, causing the audience to laugh as Mr. Trudeau patted his pockets as if searching for a dog treat.

Mr Zelensky said: “Today I want to reward those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines … along with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper – Patron – who helps not only to neutralize explosives, but also to train our children need safety rules in areas where there is a threat of mines. “

The award also went to the owner of Patron Mihailo Iliev, a major in Civil Protection.
