Weather Network – British Columbia will be affected by heavy rain and strong winds

Coastal areas of British Columbia will experience the heavy rains and winds that have battered California in recent days as the blamed low pressure system continues to move north.

The western side of Vancouver Island can expect to see up to 100mm of rain over the next three days, while the lower mainland will see closer to 10-40mm.

However, the biggest threat with this system is the effect of wind.

Winds will pick up by Thursday afternoon for the Sunshine Coast and coastal areas of Vancouver Island, with possible gusts of 70-90 km/h. The strongest of these gusts will be in the western part of the island.

In Metro Vancouver, the strongest wind gusts will be along the Delta and Tsawwassen coasts, with gusts up to 70 km/h. Winds will weaken inland.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued wind warnings for the south coast of British Columbia

“Loose objects can be blown by the wind and cause injury or damage,” the ECCC said in the warning. “Strong winds can cause power outages and downed tree limbs.”

Wind gusts are expected to peak Thursday evening before easing Friday morning.
