London:
American reality TV star and social media colossus Kim Kardashian has purchased the Atala Cross, the amethyst and diamond pendant worn several times by Princess Diana, according to auction house Sotheby’s. The item, made in the 1920s by British jeweler Garrard, sold for 163,800 pounds ($202,300) at the Royal and Noble auction house in London on Wednesday. The pendant – which Diana wore to a charity gala in 1987 – fetched more than double its pre-auction estimate, with Sotheby’s confirming it was bought by a representative on behalf of the Kardashians.
“Jewellery owned or worn by the late Princess Diana very rarely comes on the market, especially a piece like the Cross of Attala, which is so colourful, bold and distinctive,” Christian Spofforth of Sotheby’s said ahead of the sale.
“To some extent, this unusual locket is symbolic of the princess’ growing confidence in her choice of clothing and jewelery at this particular time in her life.”
The pendant wouldn’t be the first piece of fashion history to cross paths with Kim Kardashian.
Last year, the 42-year-old actress made headlines for attending the Met Gala in the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe when she serenaded then-President John F. Kennedy on his birthday in 1962.
Kardashian was initially accused of damaging the screen legend’s dress, but the Los Angeles-based Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum, which owns the piece, denied the allegations.
