A series of strong thunderstorms brought strong winds and rain in the Ottawa region on Saturday.

The storms, which were presented on Environment Canada’s weather radar as purple and red masses marking areas of heavy rainfall, cut off power, leaving nearly 120,000 customers without electricity in the city by 4 p.m., according to Hydro Ottawa.

Social media users reported downed trees. As the storm passed, darkening the sky, the rain flooded the streets, overflowing some rain gutters and causing the street lights to turn on.

Ottawa police said emergency services were called in as many trees fell, power lines fell and other storm damage.

The front of the storm hit Toronto and GTA hard earlier in the afternoon, with blown trees and dozens of power outages.
