TULSA, Oklahoma –
Four people were killed Wednesday in a shooting at a medical building in Tulsa on the hospital’s campus, a police captain said.
Deputy Police Chief Jonathan Brooks confirmed the death toll and said the shooter was also dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is unclear what caused the deadly attack. However, the unidentified gunman fired both a pistol and a rifle during the attack, Brooks said.
“Currently, officers are going through every room in the building to check for additional threats,” police said in a Facebook post shortly before 6 p.m. “We know there are many injuries and potential casualties.”
Police responded to the call three minutes after dispatchers received the signal and contacted the attacker a minute later, Brooks said.
Police Captain Richard Meulenberg also said many people were injured and that the medical complex was a “catastrophic scene”.
Police and hospital officials said they were not ready to identify the dead.
The health system St. Francis closed his campus on Wednesday afternoon because of the situation in Natalie’s medical building. Natalie’s building houses an outpatient surgery center and a breast health center.
Tulsa resident Nicholas O’Brien, whose mother was in a nearby building when the shooting took place, told reporters he rushed to the scene.
“They were pushing people out. I don’t know if some of them were injured or just injured during the shooting, but some of them couldn’t walk very well. But they just swayed and stumbled and caught them from there, “he said.
I was quite worried. So after I arrived here and then I heard that she (his mother) was fine, the shooter was shot and fell, I felt much better. What happened is still terrible “O’Brien said.
Wednesday’s shooting comes eight days after an 18-year-old gunman armed with an automatic rifle stormed Rob Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers before he was fatally shot and just two weeks after the shooting. at the Buffalo supermarket by a white man accused of killing 10 blacks in a racist attack. The recent Remembrance Day weekend marked a number of mass shootings across the country, although single deaths accounted for the majority of gun deaths.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also present, a spokesman said. A family reunion center was set up at a nearby high school to find relatives.
