iPadOS 16: These are the new features exclusive to the iPad M1

iPadOS 16 brought a handful of new features, but especially for M1 iPad users. If you want to know how you can take full advantage of the upcoming operating system and whether it’s worth upgrading to the M1 iPad Air or M1 iPad Pro, here are their exclusive features on iPadOS 16.

Stage Manager as the star of iPadOS 16 and M1 iPad users

Stage Manager will be available exclusively for M1 iPad Air and M1 iPad Pro. Here’s what you can do with this feature on iPadOS 16:

  • Resizable windows: Resize your windows to make them the perfect size for your task;
  • Central application: Focus on the application you are working with without going full screen;
  • Quick access to windows and applications: The windows of the applications you are working on are displayed in a prominent place in the center, and the other applications are arranged on the left side in the order of recent use;
  • Overlapping windows: Create overlapping windows of different sizes in one view, giving you control to arrange your ideal workspace;
  • Group apps together: Drag and drop side windows or open apps from the Dock to create sets of apps you can always return to.

External display support for M1 iPad users running iPadOS 16

Another important feature that comes to M1 iPad users running iPadOS 16 is the ability to have proper external display support.

As Apple explains, full external display support comes in the iPad Pro with the M1 chip with resolutions up to 6K, which means you can work with a variety of applications on your iPad and external display. Using iPadOS 16, you can also:

  • Access external display apps: Access your favorite apps and those you’ve used recently from the Dock, or use the app library to find the app you want faster;
  • Drag and drop between iPad and external display: iPad M1 users running iPadOS 16 can drag and drop files and windows from their iPad Pro to the external display and vice versa.

The 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro gets its own exclusive feature on the iPadOS 16

Even if you have an iPad M1, that doesn’t mean you’ll have all the features available in iPadOS 16, as Apple has kept one feature on the larger iPad with new display modes:

  • Reference mode: Allows the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display to deliver reference color for popular color standards and video formats;
  • Reference mode with Sidecar: Use iPad Pro as a secondary reference display for your Mac.

The 2020 iPad Pro and iPad Air 4 may also have their time in the spotlight

For iPad Pro 2020 or later users only, there is an exclusive iPadOS 16 magnifier accessibility feature:

  • Magnifier recognition mode: Get rich descriptions of your surroundings with a new magnifier mode that includes door detection, people recognition and image descriptions;
  • Finding a door in a magnifying glass: Find a door, read signs or labels around it and get instructions on how to open the door.

Last but not least, if you have an iPad Air 4 with 256 GB of memory or an M1 iPad Pro, you can take advantage of this feature on iPadOS 16:

  • Swap virtual memory: iPad storage can be used to expand available memory for all applications and delivers up to 16 gigabytes of memory for the most demanding applications.

These are the features that come to M1 iPad users on iPadOS 16 – the upcoming iPad operating system will be available next month as a public beta. Its official release is expected later this fall.
