Broadway’s best were recognized Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
The Tony Awards show is hosted by Broadway veteran Ariana DeBois, who recently starred in West Side Story and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“Strange Line” has the most nominations this year with 11, including one for best musical. The show, which follows an ambitious playwright and his dizzying, personified thoughts, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama 2020.
Then with 10 nominations is the pop musical “MJ”, which takes place during Michael Jackson’s tour. Also with 10 nominations is “Paradise Square”, a musical that traces the deteriorating relations between Irish immigrants and black New Yorkers in the 19th century.
Last year marked a triumphant, albeit spotty, return for Broadway, which had been closed for more than a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The show reopened in September 2021, although subsequent epidemics forced several shows to cancel performances.
