Four adults were injured and one was killed in a shooting early this morning near the state capitol building in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
The shooting happened outside the Mix Downtown nightclub at 16th and L streets.
Police spokesman Officer Ryan Wu said the deceased victim was an elderly man. According to KCRA 3 News, the victim’s family identified him as Greg Nagy Grimes, 31, who worked as an assistant football coach and teacher at Inderkum High School. He has a son.
“We want people to know what many lost today,” the family told the station. “A friend, a coach, a teacher, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, a son and most importantly a father.”
The four other victims are in stable condition at area hospitals, Wu said.
The Sacramento Bee spoke to a clubgoer who said he heard the gunshots there: “Someone said it was fireworks, but I knew it wasn’t fireworks.”
Three months ago, another shooting in downtown Sacramento killed six and wounded 12.
Police said on social media they were conducting a homicide investigation and asked members of the public with any video evidence to come forward.
