It came to light when Jacob Rees-Mogg, Brexit’s minister for Boris Johnson’s cabinet, sounded like an editorial in the Independent.
But on Thursday, when Mr Rees-Mogh announced that planned border checks on food coming to the UK from the European Union had been lifted, he said control “would be an act of self-harm”.
In a written statement, he said: “Other controls on imports of goods from the EU will no longer be introduced this year – saving British businesses up to £ 1 billion a year. In other words, not implementing Brexit would save British consumers a significant amount of money.
