George Papeorgiou, born June 6, 1939, died peacefully on April 24, 2022, with Harriet, his wife of 64 years.
George grew up in the village of Malona, on the island of Rhodes, Greece. He married Hariklia (Harriet) Zanettos in 1957 and the two left the island a year later, sailing for Canada, where they made their home in Sault Ste. Marie.
George worked at Algoma Steel, retiring in 1990 after 30 years of service. He spent many hours working in his carpentry workshop and loved to share his talent with many friends and family who received his handiwork. He also loved puzzles, coffee with friends and was active in the Greek community and church.
Beloved husband and best friend of Harriet, loving father of Milton (Carol Janis) and Maria (Boris) Vakhrusev and grandson Nicholas Vakhrusev. Brother of Eva Kukulas, Manoli Papageorgiou, son-in-law of Stella (the late John) Sasos, Effie (Tony) Antonas, uncle of Maria Sasos, Tsambikula (Nick) Kiekas and Ante Zanetos, Paul Christofakis, Milton Christofakis, George Zaneto and families. Many cousins, relatives and friends in Canada, Greece and the United States will miss George
He died of his parents Miltiades and Kyriacula Papageorgiou, his parents-in-law George and Maria Zanetos, his sister Chrysante Luis and son-in-law Steve Zanetos.
The family would like to thank the caring doctors, nurses and hospital staff for the great care of George in his last days.
A private funeral service was held at Ukraine’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church, followed by a funeral at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Mary in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Salt Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
