Anne Robinson left Countdown and issued a long statement

Ann Robinson has resigned as host of Channel 4 Countdown. The presenter has been haunted by allegations of enmity between her and Rachel Riley since taking office a year ago.

The host left the show only a year later. The 77-year-old Robinson joined the Channel 4 quiz last year, becoming the sixth presenter and the first woman to take on the role.

Past stars include Richard Whiteley, Des Linam, Des O’Connor, Jeff Stelling and Nick Huer. Countdown first launched in 1992.

Robinson, who recorded 265 episodes of the show, said: “I was the host of this wonderful show. And I stayed longer than I registered. Now is the time for an older woman to take the reins.

She added: “I also hope that I have encouraged TV bosses to realize that not all women in their late seventies are in nursing homes, playing bingo and watching tricks.

“In fact, Countdown’s genius is that it’s a brilliant way to keep your brain trained. I run 5k most days of the week. And now I can make an anagram at twice the speed of that time last year. But I have grandchildren, a big garden and a home in New York, they all deserve more attention. “

She will appear in broadcasts until the summer with a new presenter announced in time, Channel 4 reported. A spokesman for the show said: “The quick-witted Anne was a brilliant host of this iconic show.”
