Manitoba flood news: Arborg residents may need to be evacuated

Some Manitoba residents are being told to prepare for a potential evacuation amid flooding in the community.

On Tuesday, the Interlake Northeastern Emergency Council issued a press release saying the intersection of PTH 7 and PTH 68 in Arborg had been closed due to flooding.

People can still enter the city by following the detour signs at the end of PTH 7 or by traveling on PR 231 to PTH 8 and PTH 68. Travelers coming west of Arborg can use roads 226, 329 and 326, to reach the city.

The press release notes that due to the floods at the intersection of PTH 7 and PTH 68, an emergency operations center has been set up to deal with the impact on residents.

Communities are also pumping water from floods using high-volume pumps above PTH 68 and in the Icelandic River. The news release added that the river had fallen in the last two days and could hold more water.

According to the Emergency Measures Council in the north-east of Interlake, there is still room for more flooding at this intersection. If the situation is not rectified by pumping flooded water, residents of southwest Arborg have been told they may need to be evacuated.

The hospital in Arborg and the personal care home have been notified of the situation and will install a tiger dam around the complex. These facilities are also ready for evacuation.

All residents who need help can call their municipal service.

On Sunday, the city of Arborg and the municipality of Bifrost-Riverton declared a local state of emergency.
