With the news that Saskatchewan will raise its minimum wage in the fall, Manitoba will soon have the lowest minimum wage among Canadian provinces.
The Saskatchewan government announced on Tuesday that from October 1, the minimum wage will increase to $ 13 from the current salary of $ 11.81, which is currently the lowest in Canada.
The goal for Saskatchewan is to increase its minimum wage to $ 15 / hour by October 2024.
Manitoba, which currently has the second lowest minimum wage in Canada – $ 11.95, announced in April that the minimum wage would rise to $ 12.35 on October 1. Although wages are rising, they will be the lowest in Canada.
The news was criticized by politicians and organizations in Manitoba.
The Manitoba Labor Federation called the news “uncomfortable.”
“If Prime Minister Heather Stephenson was concerned about the difficulties faced by low-paid workers in our province, she would also be embarrassed,” MFL President Kevin Rebecca said in a statement.
“The Conservative governments in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan plan to significantly increase the minimum wage in their provinces this year. Instead of following suit, Prime Minister Stephenson is following in Brian Palister’s footsteps and keeping thousands of people on the minimum wage in poverty.
Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kineu is urging the province to pay workers’ wages.
“Manitobans are working hard to provide for their families and build our economy – they deserve better than last place,” he said in a statement.
A spokesman for the Minister of Labor, Consumer Protection and Government Services Reg Hallower told CTV News that the minimum hourly wage in Manitoba will rise by 40 cents to $ 12.35 on October 1, based on 2021 inflation of 3, 27 percent.
“By indexing the minimum wage to inflation, the province ensures predictability of costs for employers and ensures that the purchasing power of wages is maintained,” the spokesman said in an email to CTV News.
“The province monitors minimum wage levels across the country to ensure that the Manitoba minimum is appropriate and sufficient.
The spokesman told CTV News that the increase in the minimum wage in October will be the largest increase since 2017.
