What happened when the M1 was closed in both directions between junction 22 and junction 21a after the crash

Police have launched an investigation to call witnesses after a severe M1 crash. This happened after a car left the north lane and crashed into a tree between intersections 21a and 22.

The incident happened shortly before 10.45 am on Sunday morning (May 8). The passengers in the black Ford Mondeo – driver and passenger – were taken to hospital for treatment.

The passenger – a woman – is in danger of death. The driver’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, Leicestershire police have confirmed.

All lanes are reopened shortly after 5.15pm. There are three miles of traffic jams on the approach, according to Highways England.

Detectives appealed to all witnesses to appear as part of their ongoing investigation. Leicestershire police have issued a statement advising drivers to take alternative routes. Officials said: “The road is closed – M1 between J22 and J21A in both directions. 11 o’clock in the morning. Please note that the upper road is closed due to a police incident.

“Please find alternative routes – updates will follow. Thank you for your patience. ”Highway chiefs confirmed that traffic on the northern lane had been stopped.
