Nokets’ Nikola Jokic wins NBA MVP award for second season, according to report

Nikola Jokic won the NBA MVP award for 2021-22, taking the league’s highest individual award for the second year in a row, according to ESPN. Jokic’s successive MVP awards are in line with his colleague finalist Janis Adetokunmpo’s 2018-19 and ’19 -20 seasons. The third finalist, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, never won the award.

In addition to assists, Jokic managed to improve his average performance in each major statistic category during the regular season. He finished with career records in points (27.1), rebounds (13.8), blocks (0.9) and stolen balls (1.5) per game. He also peaked his career with 58.3 per cent of his flying goals and although he did not match his career high scores in free throws or a 3-point percentage, he peaked in the total number of free throws (379 ) and 3 points (97) made.

The match between Jokic, Embiid and Adetokunmpo was fierce. Embiid won the title with an average score of 30.6 points. Adetokunmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks finished highest among the three, finishing third in the Eastern Conference with a 51-31 record. The 76ers of Embiid had the same record, but finished fourth due to tiebreaks. Jokic’s Nuggets were ranked No. 6 in the West, although they won just three games less and were sent off in the first round by the Golden State Warriors.

All three MVP finalists had to overcome significant difficulties to get their teams to where they did. Embiid played the first half of the season without Ben Simmons, who was absent due to a request for an exchange, and Adetokunmpo had to play out of center position due to an injury received by Brooke Lopez. But Lopez eventually returned and the 76ers swapped Simmons for James Harden. Jokic was not relieved. Star teammate Jamal Murray has not played a single game this season, and variant No. 3 Michael Porter Jr. has played only nine games. Jokic’s team may have had a worse record than the other two, but his ability to keep the Nuggets afloat without their second and third best players probably won him that trophy.

Jokic is the 15th player to win numerous MVP awards, joining Bob Petit, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Karim Abdul-Jabar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Carl Malone, Tim Sutt. , LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Adetokunmpo. He is the only Nugget to win an NBA MVP award, although Spencer Haywood won an ABA MVP award when the team was still known as the Denver Rockets.

With Murray and Porter injured, Denver has never had a real chance to win the championship this season, but Jokic managed to bring them to the playoffs in ways no other player could have. He is not a traditional MVP in style or ranking, but voters said he was the most valuable player for the 2021-22 NBA season.
