Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new weapons and equipment for Ukraine on Sunday after a surprise visit to Kyiv, the capital.
Speaking at a press conference after talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Trudeau also said that Canada was imposing new sanctions on Russian individuals and legal entities in connection with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Today I am announcing more military aid, drone cameras, satellite imagery, small arms, ammunition and other support, including funding for demining operations,” Trudeau said.
“And we are proposing new sanctions against 40 Russian individuals and five legal entities, oligarchs and close associates of the regime in the defense sector, all of whom are complicit in Putin’s war,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
Trudeau visited the city of Irpin near Kyiv, the center of fierce fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops, before the Russians withdrew in late March.
He said Canada is reopening its embassy in the Ukrainian capital.
Canada is also providing $ 25 million to the UN World Food Program as part of its efforts to maintain food security and will eliminate trade tariffs on all Ukrainian imports to Canada next year.
