Ayden Kalioinen, a high school student, is running as a Liberal candidate for Sault Ste. Marie’s ride in the upcoming provincial election may have ended abruptly.
The 18-year-old is reportedly out of the race after being recognized as a candidate for riding on Monday night.
Speaking to SooToday on Tuesday afternoon, Kalioinen said his removal as a Liberal candidate has not yet been confirmed.
“I am still negotiating with the party while we talk,” he said.
Kallioinen says negotiations with the party began after an opinion emerged about his approval, accused of participating in “Minecraft chats, where there are many jokes about people dying of AIDS.” The article also refers to a Instagram handle that belonged to Kallioinen.
The future politician says that both accusations about his online activities are false.
“Obviously a group of people I contacted in an online forum years ago said a lot of humiliating things that I had no control over or involvement with,” Kalioinen said. “Nothing I said personally came to light. This was a reporter, I believe in Toronto Sun, who was a former Liberal official and had some problems with the way we nominated candidates, and he wanted another candidate to be nominated to Sault.
“I do not even know what to say to this. I have no personal involvement in this, so I cannot control what these people say, nor have I been involved. This has come to light and I am still talking to party members about it and we will resolve it as best we can.
