Hockey fans have something else to get excited about in addition to the ongoing action from the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The NHL 2022 Draft Lottery is held on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT on Sportsnet. The expected results will determine the order of the first 16 selections in the draft this summer.
Representatives of the non-playoff NHL teams will gather at the NHL Network studio in New Jersey for the annual live opening of the top half of the first round draft order.
The Montreal Canadiens have the best odds this year after finishing the worst in the league 22-49-11 just one season after a trip to the Stanley Cup final. The Canadians have held the No. 1 NHL record five times, but all of these cases occurred between 1963 and 1980.
The last time a Canadian franchise other than the Edmonton Oilers or the Toronto Maple Leafs was the best was in 1996, when the Ottawa Senators used it to take Chris Phillips.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS YEAR’S LOTTERY?
The project lottery underwent several changes in its shape in 2021. Not only was the 32nd franchise, the Seattle Kraken, added, but the NHL reduced it to two lotteries instead of three. There were separate draws for each of the top three choices from 2016 to 2020.
Two new changes come into force this year and the main change is big. Teams will now be banned from moving up more than 10 places in the preliminary draft. This means that, unlike in previous years, not all teams participating in the lottery have the right to win one of the two best choices. The main purpose of this change was to ensure that the team that finished last in the regular season was not selected worse than the third overall.
In addition, in the future, no team can win the best selection in the draft lottery more than twice in five years. Whichever team wins No. 1 on Tuesday will be eligible to do so only once more between 2023 and 2026. The Oilers, Buffalo Sabers and New Jersey Devils have won the lottery several times over the past decade.
WHAT CAN THE WINNERS OF TOTORIA EXPECT IN JULY?
The results of the project lottery on Tuesday will see that a team will assert its right to choose the best potential candidate Shane Wright.
The Kingston Frontenax star followed the new youth season, scoring 39 goals and 66 points, setting a personal record of 62 assists and 94 points in 63 games in 2021-22.
Wright will be preparing for the OHL playoff game against the North Bay Battalion while the lottery and TV show take place, but the striker has expressed his desire to be the best choice for the team that wins the lottery.
Strikers Logan Kuli (USNTDP), Juraj Slafkowski (TPS Turku on Liiga), Matthew Savoy (WHL Winnipeg Ice) and defenders Simon Nemek (HK Nitra in Slovakia) and David Jiricek (HC Plzen on Extraliiga) are among the other best prospects in tournament draft class.
“The top class of this draft class is extremely diverse,” wrote Sam Costentino of Sportsnet in his April NHL draft rankings. “Not only from the point of view of nationality, but also from the point of view of hockey. We have smaller, more experienced attackers. We have many opportunities for right-handed strikes, both forward and defensive. We have some massive defenders, but there are also a few small, smoothly sliding D. ”
The NHL 2022 Draft takes place on July 7-8 at the Bell Center in Montreal.
WHICH TEAMS HAVE THE BEST LOTTERY ODDS?
1. Montreal Canadiens (18.5 percent)
2. Arizona Coyotes (13.5 percent)
3. Seattle Kraken (11.5 percent)
4. Philadelphia Flyers (9.5 percent)
5. New Jersey Devils (8.5%)
6. Chicago Blackhawks * (7.5 percent)
7. Ottawa Senators (6.5 percent)
8. Detroit Red Wings (6 percent)
9. Buffalo Sabers (5 percent)
10. Anaheim Ducks (3.5%)
11. San Jose Sharks (3 percent)
12. Columbus Blue Jackets (2.5%)
13. New York Islanders (2 percent)
14. Winnipeg Jets (1.5 percent)
15. Vancouver Canucks (0.5 percent)
16. Vegas Golden Knights ** (0.5 percent)
* – As part of the trade with Seth Jones, Chicago will transfer its choice from the first round of 2022 to Columbus, if not among the first two choices. If Chicago wins one of the two lotteries on Tuesday, Chicago will keep the choice and instead send its first round of 2023 to Columbus.
** – As part of the trade with Jack Eichel, Vegas will transfer its choice from the first round of 2022 to Buffalo, if not in the top 10. If Vegas wins one of the two lotteries on Tuesday, Vegas will keep the choice and instead will send its first round selection for 2023 to Buffalo.
Montreal has a 25.5% chance of securing No. 1 choice, although the team has an 18.5% chance of winning the special first draw. This is where the new lottery restrictions benefit Canadiens this year, as Montreal will still retain a top selection if one of the top five teams wins the lottery.
The odds will be adjusted after the initial draw and the odds of the other 15 teams will increase in proportion to the second draw depending on which team wins the first lottery.
The 14 teams that do not win a single draw will receive the remaining selections in reverse order for most points of the regular season.
The new restrictions on the lottery mean that Blue Jackets, Islanders, Jets, Canucks and Golden Knights will not be eligible to receive the best choice in the lottery this year.
Coyotes, Kraken, Ducks and Sharks all have a chance to win number 1 for the first time in the history of the franchise.
SIGNIFICANT LOTTERY SCENARIOS
The teams are already at the mercy of the odds. Everyone involved will obviously want a choice of number 1 or number 2, but depending on how the numbers fall, there may be some remarkable best / worst results, such as …
Neither Montreal nor Arizona won any lottery draws: the Canadiens and the Coyotes were the only two teams to finish the season with less than 60 points in the standings. No team has scored fewer goals than Arizona and no team has conceded more goals than Montreal. Both teams have multiple choices in the first round – Montreal has Calgary, while Arizona also has Carolina and Colorado – but if anyone misses a choice from the first two, front offices and fans will not be able to hide their disappointment. Teams with the first two odds are left without a choice in the top two in three of the last five lotteries.
Buffalo’s night can vary considerably with the Vegas variable: The optimist will imagine that the Sabers will finish with a first or second choice, as well as the 16th overall choice with the kind assistance of Vegas. The pessimist would think that Buffalo could come out of the top 10 or even watch the Golden Knights win an incredible top 2 choice and then be left with the choice of Vegas in 2023, which will probably not be as high as number 16. place if Vegas returns to the playoffs next year.
Columbus could end up with two top 10 picks: The Blue Jackets are another team hoping to leave the big winners in the draft. The perfect night for Yarmo Kekaläinen’s club would see the Blue Jackets win the top two by their own lottery, as Chicago misses both. That way, Columbus could end up with two in the top 10. Even if Columbus’ own name isn’t said, the Blue Jackets just don’t want to see luck fall on the road to Chicago.
LATEST RESULTS FROM NHL TOTARIA
The NHL introduced the multi-draw lottery system in 2016, the year after Oilers finished with Connor McDavid.
The team with the worst record in the regular season finished with the first overall pick in three of the last six years.
The biggest dashboard jumps since multiple lotteries were introduced were the New York Rangers, which jumped seven teams to win in 2020, and the New Jersey Devils, which jumped four places in 2017.
Remarkable winnings in the second place lottery led to the rise of the Flyers with 11 places in 2017, and the Hurricanes – with nine places in 2018.
In 2021, the Sabers had the worst record, the best odds and won the best choice, later choosing the blue liner Owen Power first overall. Kraken won the choice № 2, although it has the third best odds. The expansion team overtook the Ducks and eventually selected Matty Beniers second overall. Anaheim went with Mason McTavish after falling one place to third overall.
