Pro-abortion protesters support why they are protesting in Ottawa

Thousands were in downtown Ottawa on Thursday for the March for Life rally against abortion, an annual march, but the first since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling expired to breathe new life into the anti-abortion movement.

This initial draft opinion, written by Judge Samuel Alito and published by the Politico newspaper, suggests that a majority of U.S. judges are ready to overturn Roe v. Wade, a remarkable 1973 decision protecting American women’s right to seek abortion – and return the matter to the state legislatures.

Access to abortion is also a problem in the Conservative Party of Canada’s leadership race, with all candidates except Leslin Lewis saying they either have a choice or that they will not introduce legislation on abortion as Prime Minister. Following an expired U.S. court ruling, the federal government announced millions of dollars in funding initiatives it says it will improve access to abortion services and reproductive health information in Canada.

The March for Life abortion has been held in the Canadian capital for the past 25 years on the anniversary of the C-150 omnibus bill passed in Canada in 1969, decriminalizing contraception and allowing abortion in certain circumstances, according to its website. .

Counter-protesters also gathered in downtown Ottawa, with one sign saying “Abortion is health care.”

Here is what some of the protesters on both sides said.

Lucy Fortier

“I love, I love everyone. I love people who choose the pro-election country, I love their babies and my heart breaks for them because I’m sure it’s not an easy decision for them to have an abortion and I just want people to know that … there is a choice. You can have your baby, you can get help. You can even adopt your baby, there are a lot of people who, you know, want to adopt. “

“I have noticed that the pro-election is closer. I remember walking the streets and they would be in one section, and now I notice that they are on the other side of the street.

“I just read that Mr Trudeau gave $ 3.5 million more to the country that supports the election, I just think that’s wrong. Yes. I just find that life begins with conception, I believe it is life, it grows, it is alive, it is not dead. Give him a chance. “

Karian Alix

“I think it’s different because so far the United States has been a place where abortion was normal. As anyone could do, except some states. But this year, with all the judges who want where to erase women’s right to make their own choices about our body and everything in our body. I think that’s why this year is different. “

“We still have to fight for our rights. As we can see, there are many people who are against women’s rights. That’s why we’re here. And we still have to fight. And many women and men believe that abortion is something that will remain in Canada. But if we want to go back from about 10 years ago, when Stephen Harper was there, he’s talking about taking abortion rights, so we never know if someone in power who wants to get women’s rights back still needs to let’s fight for it. “

Chris Bergsma

“We just show up to support the unprotected in the womb. I think they need a voice. Exactly what we see every day in our country, the hundreds of children who were slaughtered innocently. So we are here to support them, to protect them and to hope for change. “

“I think it helps, as if we are making progress. I think in the United States you see some change happening, some progress, so I think in time we’ll keep making more progress as we keep coming out on these, keep talking. “

“We are peaceful protesters, we are here to support life, we are not here against women, we are here for women. We would like to support women if they need support with children.”

Alexandra Araiz

“I came out to show solidarity with all those who defend the reproductive rights of all Canadians and all people in the world.

I do not expect [the protest] to be too dramatic indeed, so I will just join the people who have moved to the parliament building, and I will just announce my presence, our voice will be heard. “

Faye Latham

“I feel that life is so precious and we are just destroying innocent children. We adopted a boy from Bulgaria. He is now 30 years old and also has children. But I’m just so grateful that his mother chose to give him life… I met people who had seven, eight, nine abortions and his mother didn’t abort him. And that’s why I just feel so strongly that now, as a grandmother, I want to stand up for my life. “

“My heart is with these young people who are just screaming and angry. And this is not the way. I was here when Rowe v. Wade became law. And I hope it will be repealed. Its about time.”
