The RCMP confiscated homemade tube bombs, bomb-making equipment, weapons and ammunition over lunch at a home in Moncton on Thursday.
Police say the investigation has been ongoing for some time and led to a search warrant that was executed around 12:30 pm at the home of Elmwood Drive.
Numerous RCMP squads from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were on the scene Thursday when the search was conducted.
The search resulted in the seizure of more than half a dozen improvised explosive devices, as well as components to build additional devices, nine unsecured firearms, including several restricted and banned weapons, and ammunition, the Codiac Regional RCMP said in a press release.
A 40-year-old man from Moncton was arrested at the scene and later released on parole. He is due to appear in Moncton County Court on October 12, 2022.
There was no one else in the home at the time, the RCMP said.
No risk to the public at any time: RCMP
The seizure is one of the most “significant” RCMP explosive units he has seen in a long time, the Codiac Regional RCMP Sgt. Marie-Yves Mackenzie-Plante said on Friday.
She noted that the Elmwood Drive home is located in a residential and business area and that there are two schools within a radius of three kilometers from the home.
In a statement issued late Friday afternoon, the RCMP said there was no risk to the public at any point during the operation.
“Members took all precautionary measures during the execution of the search warrant, including making sure we had an on-site expertise to deal with any items found,” the sergeant said. Codiac RCMP’s Mario Fortin said in a statement.
The investigation continues.
