A driver who hit and killed a woman and her three young daughters in Brampton, Ont., Nearly two years ago has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Brady Robertson will receive a loan of nearly three years for the time already served pending trial, which will reduce the total to 14 years and two months.
Prosecutors have demanded a sentence of 23 years in prison for 21-year-old Robertson and a life ban from driving. Meanwhile, the defense claims that Robertson should be sentenced to seven years.
Robertson pleaded guilty to four counts of dangerous driving, causing death in connection with the June 18, 2020 crash that killed Carolina Chasoulo and her daughters Clara, Liliana and Mila, who were between the ages of six and one.
But he pleaded not guilty to four counts of surgery while being harmed by drugs that killed him, and his lawyers challenged the constitutionality of Canadian law, which sets a legal limit on the concentration of THC in the blood while driving.
Ontario court Sandra Caponechia found that Robertson had a blood THC concentration of 40 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood about 45 minutes after the crash, which is eight times the legal limit.
The constitutional challenge was rejected last month, and as a result, Robertson was found guilty of driving charges.
At a sentencing hearing last month, Robertson apologized for his actions, saying he was “deeply tormented” by what he had done.
Robertson said he would feel guilty for the rest of his life and wanted to take responsibility for his actions.
“I wanted to end my life countless times, but that would be a scary way,” he said at the time. “I want to pay for what I did, I want to endure my time … This family deserves justice.”
