For the first time in three years, there will be personal celebrations on Canada Day this July, but they will not be held on Parliament’s hill.
The main stage of Canada Day will be at LeBreton Flats Park, west of downtown Ottawa this year, Canadian Heritage said in a press release Monday.
“The Central Block Rehabilitation Project means that the main stage of Canada Day is moving to a new location in the heart of the capital,” the statement said.
However, it added that “the iconic Parliament Hill will include some activities”. No further details were provided on what activities will be hosted by Parliament Hill.
Parliament Hill has been the main venue for Canada Day for more than 50 years.
But this July 1, LeBreton Flats will host the daytime ceremony and evening show, among other activities. Another new venue, Place des festivals Zibi, will “include programs for the whole family”, the statement said.
Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill is closed to traffic after Convoy of Freedom protests occupied downtown Ottawa for three weeks in January and February.
Canada Day celebrations have taken place in practice over the past two summers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, officials planned to move the main stage of Canada Day to nearby Major’s Hill Park due to planned hill construction.
The Center Block construction project is expected to be completed between 2030 and 2031. The $ 5 billion project is the largest and most complex rehabilitation project in Canadian history.
