ALMOST 4,000 lightning strikes in Dorset during a dramatic thunderstorm on Sunday night.
Dorset residents, incapacitated during the thunderstorm, took some amazing photos and footage of the event, which lit up the sky for about three hours.
Mother Nature put on a dazzling show with senior operational meteorologist Marco Petagna of the United Kingdom’s Meteorological Service, tweeting that nearly 4,000 lightning strikes had occurred in Dorset in the two hours just before 1am.

Fellow weather enthusiast Dorset Sun said: “The duration of this storm was so impressive. The conditions were perfect for us to continue fueling the storm. It must have lasted two to three hours.”

The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Meteorological Service said the warning could see that floods would affect the area on Sunday night, with the warning currently active from 8pm on Sunday, May 15th and 5am on Monday, May 16th.

A spokesman said: The Met Office said: “Although thunderstorms remain uncertain, there may be a combination of heavy rain, frequent lightning and hail on Sunday nights in several places.

“If thunderstorms develop, they are likely to move north from the south coast on Sunday night to parts of South Wales, South England and East Anglia at night, before gradually weakening on Monday morning.

“While some places will remain dry, in some places 20-30 mm of rain may fall in less than an hour, with frequent lightning and additional hail hazards.

According to the meteorological service, there will be heavier rain today around 11:00 and 12:00, and things will clear up from 15:00 onwards.
Bournemouth & Poole Weather said temperatures could reach 21C by Monday afternoon.

Posting on the Bournemouth Echo Facebook page, one witness said: “It was amazing. I heard an all-powerful crash around 12.30am to 12.35pm, I never heard anything like that before the windows shook.”
Looking ahead for the rest of this week, Dorset Sun said: “This week’s theme will be the sun and the rains. Some of this rain may be thunder, especially on Wednesday night. I feel warm in the sunshine with maxims in my late teens / early twenties. ”
