Fish dinners off the menu while NI shops with chips battered by rising prices

The rising price of fish and other materials pushes fish dinners off the menu and customers walk out the door at some Co Fermanagh chips stores

A chip owner in Eniskilen described the impact of rising prices in recent months, as he is now charging more than £ 6 for his fish, after just two months ago at £ 4.70.

A chips shop in Roslea even said it was removing fish from the menu altogether because it did not want to pass on additional prices to consumers.

The owner of the Golden Arrow in Enniskilen, Gary Ledwith, says that some products have even doubled in price in 2022 and these costs must be passed on to customers.

“The price is overstated in itself, a lot of people actually bought cod, but they don’t do that anymore and all Irish or British fishing boats now get the best price wherever they go,” Gary said. MyFermanagh.

“The order for the fish we will use is around £ 135 per box and now it is up to around £ 220.

“One fish with us now was £ 4.70 and now it’s £ 6, and that was just before Easter and, frankly, it’s going to get higher.

“The most important thing now is that people do not enter through the door because the penny has fallen because they did not receive it.

“People who usually come to my door no longer have an income.”

“We can’t go around raising the prices of everything every day, and if and when it falls, I’ll lower the price, but right now I can’t.”

In the southeastern part of the county, The Tasty Bite in Roslea said earlier this week that it was completely removing fish from its menu in response to rising prices.

“Just a little update to advise you that unfortunately I do not have fish in stock at the moment,” said a Facebook post.

“For now, I’m removing it from the menu because of its price, I’m sure you’re all aware of the increase in the price of everything.

“If I buy the fish at the current price, I will have to charge at least £ 2 extra per serving, which I think is unviable.”
