Two Point Campus students are as weird, wonderful and fun as you might expect

It is tempting to joke about Two Point Campus in the spirit of “Nudist Knight and Wizard Studying the Dark Arts? Sounds like my first year! ”And then giggled in front of the night audience with an open microphone. It’s also tempting to say something like, “Do you know Two Point Hospital?” That’s right, but at university, “but that would also be the lazy way out. In fact, the strangest man I knew at university wore a top hat and an opera cloak on campus only once for fun (and now there’s a good job), and Two Point Campus is actually a much more complex and bizarre driving model than the previous two. and a really ongoing hospital effort at Point Studios.

I have a whole weekend to take advantage of a preview of Two Point Campus recently, where you run a series of universities located in the same incredibly crazy world as Two Point Hospital. Despite all my efforts, I have never been able to achieve a student satisfaction of around 75% on a good day, and running a school that offers more than three courses seems out of the question. Because the curriculum is two-tier, these classes can include something like near-real things like chef or scientific VR stuff, but you can also learn to be a knight or a wizard. There’s also a clown school, and you can learn to be an evil money-grabbing businessman like Jordan Belfort – and yes, these are separate courses, wakka wakka! But these were the only ones who could play in my review. There were many empty unlock squares in the full prospectus.

Spy school was actually one of the courses I discovered that I failed to try.

The educational side of things is the more familiar part of the Two Point Campus. You build rooms like lecture halls, science labs, and libraries, and you get staff — teachers, porters, and campus assistants — with the right staff skills in those rooms. At Hogwarts’ parody level, for example, I needed teachers for magic and dark arts classes, as well as private training (which is essential for maintaining grades). The cleaners keep the place clean, but they need maintenance and mechanical ability to repair all the weird machines like giant risotto pans and bunsen burners. At least one of your porters must also have security skills to drive attackers out of rival schools. These things, along with basic amenities like toilets and a staff room, are similar to the things you would build and manage at Two Point Hospital. In principle, you provide a service.

This is a PR screenshot of something called Cheeseball. I don’t know what Cheeseball is, but I’m pretty motivated to find out.

Two Point Studios design director Ben Huskins says they have started thinking about their next game about halfway through Two Point Hospital’s development and have stuck to the educational environment for several reasons. “The first was that we felt like everyone had some experience in education; “Even if he didn’t go to college or university, everyone has these memories from school of their strange classmates or their eccentric teachers,” he tells me. Another reason was that the setting involved a lot of different TV shows or movies, so there were plenty of opportunities to put our slightly weird Two Point Twist on a bunch of references to pop culture as well as real-life universal courses.

“And then the other thing was, while we were doing Two Point Hospital, we were experimenting with things like the staff and patients who have these interesting personality traits and things like that, and obviously the weird and wonderful performances of all the patients. We tried to clarify these characters so that they have a little depth in them, “explains Hoskins.” And we thought, well, with our next guest, we really like to dive a little more for these little people. “

Some of my science students are about to start a practical lesson. One of them does not seem to meet the health and safety guidelines

Because this is the other part of the Two Point Campus. You need to manage the lives of students outside the classroom. If they get too bored, can’t sleep enough, don’t have friends to go out with, can’t wash or can’t join a club, then they will be unhappy – at that point they will stop paying fees in protest. Unhappy students are also at risk of failing their courses and dropping out, while happy ones perform better in class, thus earning you academic success bonuses.

This means that while monitoring your academic situation, you should also set tables in halls where they can communicate, provide pastoral care, build a student union bar, put movie dinners and parties on the calendar, and so on. Oh, and set up a few club stands and activities on campus and build a second shower stall. And a new coffee stand. And expanding dormitories. It’s a lot to juggle, but not so much that it’s impossible. Rather, you are always engaged when you play the game. There is never anything to do. Fortunately, there is a short stay during the summer holidays, where you can use all the cash reserves you have to expand what you need at your own pace. This is a good time to build a new dormitory, for example (the developers recommend one bed for 5 students, so if you are unscrupulous like me, you may prefer to hit a few new beds in an existing room).

This is a very eternal campus, in a way that anyone can find a loved one. That’s part of it, says Huskins, because if he turns around a little stupid, it means he won’t grow old that fast. And honestly, there’s no way I’m going to look at Two Point Campus and say, “Well, the junior students at my university didn’t have that kind of armor!” But senior producer Joe Koehler says they’ve made an effort to make it recognizable to everyone. “I think we somehow knew the key features you need to have. For example, there are always student unions, dormitories, bathrooms and staff rooms and all these courses. So it brings everything together and works with artists and animators to get that feel, ”she explains.

Koehler also said that this time “they really pushed the creative side of the game” and wanted players to be able to repair, build campus buildings and have more decorations. “You can get a lot of unique campuses and a lot of unique gaming experiences,” she added.

Students also play a role in this. As well as students from different courses who have different quirks – culinary students turn hot dogs to others, suppressing their hunger; wizards can make waste disappear – they also have personalities. “If I take this course, then I tend to attract these types of students. So, your choice about the courses you take determines the student population you receive. And then different types of students have different traits and advantages associated with them, and they interact with each other in interesting ways, ”explains Huskins.

True, it’s especially funny, for example, to have a bunch of dark art students (who all look like goths who are good at The Crow) mingling with clown students (who all look, you know, clowns). I can’t say in my heart that I was once very aware of their personality traits, which have a greater effect on the game, and I found that the selection of the abilities of my staff is much more important. But I enjoyed creating special areas for picnics and campus meetings and forcing every university I run to have a thriving book club. Huskins’ favorite is the Nature Club, whose members often run only in fig leaves – except for the knights, who wear protective hats on their helmets.

This sense of humor is something of a trademark of Two Point Studios and you can see it everywhere in the animations of the characters and the design work. Koehler’s favorite thing in the game is Love Trumpet, a piece of furniture that creates romance between students by emitting bubbles. You can also build a dragon tower for Knight School, which has a real dragon. But it’s also in writing, and one of my favorite new additions to Two Point Campus is student radio, a series of very well-watched little vignettes that discuss everything every presenter is interested in. They run between songs and commercials for in-universe products like Cheesey Gubbins (ONE! BIG! GUBBIN!). Honestly, it’s more fun than most episodes of LBC.

But the fact that Two Point Campus is whimsical and fun obscures my earlier idea, which is that this game, at least above the four juicy levels of training I’ve played, is pretty hard to be good at. Maybe just the abundance of information on offer makes me feel that way right now, and like Two Point Hospital before it, there seems to be a lot of room for expansion. We will have to wait and see when the full game will start on August 9 later this year. In the meantime, however, I do not know if they have a course on plate rotation, but it will certainly be useful to them.
