Scott Dixon leads the pole position for Chip Ganassi Racing on the 106th Indianapolis 500 run, and the 2008 winner will have a well-known company around him, as Ganassi racing cars will also start second (Alex Palu), fifth. (Marcus Erickson), Tony Canaan (sixth) and Jimmy Johnson (12th).
In the previous 105 events, only 21 times the driver who started first also finished first, including Dixon in 2008, his only victory in the Indy 500. The last driver to do so was Simon Page in 2019.
Judging by Friday’s Carb Day session, Ganassi’s cars will be the ones to win, as it was Canaan’s turn to lead the time schedule at 227,114 mph. Ericsson and Dixon were second and fourth, with two-time winner Takuma Sato splitting Dale Coyne Racing.
Rinus VK, who started third, was second when he issued the first warning for the entire course. VeeKay’s Ed Carpenter race car was surprised by a gust of wind in the short gutter between turns 1 and 2, overturned and hit the wall hard, ending his day.
Sunday’s weather looks hot, with a maximum of 83 degrees and no precipitation in the forecast. Gusts of up to 17 mph can be a problem with short gutters between turns 1-2 and 3-4.
