A man was bitten by a coyote over the weekend while in a park in western Toronto, officials said.
The accident happened on May 28 in Westlake Park, near Weston Road and Black Creek Drive.
According to a press release issued Tuesday, livestock workers were on site to assess the area and determine if there was a coyote den or “any other factors that could lure coyotes.”
“The coyote from the incident last weekend is still at large and residents are advised to be careful when visiting the park as well as neighboring areas,” officials said in a statement.
“The city will put up signs at the entrance to the park to warn residents that there are coyotes nearby. The area is fenced off while Toronto Animal Services continues its investigation.
City officials have distributed educational materials to nearby residents about urban coyotes and the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forests has been notified.
“Coyotes do not usually pose a danger to humans, and human bites are abnormal behavior,” officials said, adding that most interactions are the result of close food sources or people who deliberately feed the animals.
