(Pocket-lint) – Apple Carplay gets a whole new look and focus.
Inspired by the WatchOS design, the new look seems to use gadgets and even spread across the dashboard, if the manufacturer allows.
Apple hopes to eventually power your entire instrument cluster – including the MPH device and other dashboard tools. In addition, you will be able to choose different types of tiles to display, including weather, even smart home features, to see instantly important information while driving.
You can also choose to run Apple Maps on the screen behind the wheel as a background for the dials, while fuel information (or battery details) can be left as separate widgets.
The new Apple Carplay will be officially launched in 2023. We’re still not quite sure how backward it will be with existing Carplay-enabled vehicles, although Apple claims that more than 90% of all cars currently made in the United States support the current version, so we would expect the company to make an effort to have at least one version of it to work in them.
We hope this will also encourage application developers to incorporate Carplay support into their applications. A number of essentials are already doing so, but we found a few that we would like to see included.
