Apple recently announced its latest iPhone operating system on WWDC: iOS 16. While the update focuses primarily on allowing users to customize their iPhone experience in new ways, another added feature was discovered through the developer beta, which may be of interest only to Switch owners.

Switching controllers, including Joy-Con and Pro Controller, will now be compatible with iOS devices supported by iOS 16. This was discovered by iOS developer Riley Tetsut and subsequently tested by Nat Brown, Apple’s engineering manager, who also said that it is possible to switch between using one or two Joy-Con together at the touch of a few buttons.

The update now essentially allows all major console controllers to be compatible with iPhone and iPad devices, including DualSense on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S controllers, and now Switch’s Joy-Con. Unfortunately, if you have the following devices, you will not be able to download the latest operating system:

  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st generation)

However, for all other iPhone owners, you’ll be able to start using your Joy-Con on iOS-compatible devices when the new operating system launches to the public in the fall. Meanwhile, the developer beta is available right now, and a public beta will be launched soon, just in case you want an early review.

What do you think about the added Joy-Con functionality to iOS devices? Will you try it when it launches for the public in the fall? Let us know!
