The features of iOS 16 that iPhone users will love the most

This story is part of WWDC 2022, the full coverage of CNET by and for Apple’s annual developer conference.

As always, Apple’s big speech was full of exciting software announcements on the first day of WWDC 2022, the annual developers’ conference. WWDC is where we usually get a first look at the next version of iOS, the operating system that powers the iPhone. This year, Apple released iOS 16, promising a bunch of brand new features for your iPhone.

With the next big iPhone update, you’ll be able to edit the messages you’ve already sent in the Messages app, and get new tools to customize your iPhone, including the ability to customize the way the lock screen looks. Also new are the privacy features for people in violent relationships. iOS 16 will probably be released in September along with many iPhone 14 rumors and will be available for iPhone 8 and later. However, developers can download the software now.

A preview of Apple’s iOS 16 was pre-recorded and broadcast online, as well as for a small outdoor audience on the lawn at Apple Park, the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. WWDC’s main appeal came after the release of iOS 15.5 on May 16, which included updates to Apple Cash, Photos Memories and the Podcasts app. Apple also recently released a developer beta for iOS 15.6, which doesn’t have many new features at the moment and seems to focus mainly on debugging.

iOS 16 allows you to edit and “cancel” messages

“Inconvenient spelling mistakes are a thing of the past,” said Craig Federigi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, when he introduced three of the most sought-after features for the Messages app.

First, in iOS 16 you will be able to edit the sent messages. So, if you notice a typo after a message, you will be able to edit the message after the fact. A little “edited” appears in the state below the message.

In Messages, you can edit previously sent messages.

Apple

Then – and this may be my favorite new feature – you can call up a sent message immediately. If you accidentally send an incomplete message, you can use the Undo Tool to prevent it from being read and hopefully look less chaotic to your friends and family.

Finally, you can mark messages and threads as unread. This can be a great tool when you don’t have time to reply to a message right now, but you want to make sure you come back to it later.

Your iPhone gets a new custom lock screen

One of the things you watch most about your iPhone is the lock screen, especially if you have an iPhone with a Face ID. iOS 16 brings the most significant update to the iPhone’s lock screen to date. Press and hold to edit the lock screen. You can drag to try several different styles. Each style changes the color filter for the background photo and the font of the lock screen, so that everything complements each other. This is a bit like Apple’s perception of Google’s Material You, which launches Android 12.

You can also customize the fonts for the time and date and add lock screen widgets such as temperature, activity rings, and calendar. The widgets are similar to the complications on the Apple Watch lock screen.

Your iPhone will become more customizable in iOS 16. You will be able to choose what the lock screen looks like, next to the font and color.

Apple

You can even set up multiple custom lock screens with different widgets and easily swipe to switch between them. There’s even a photo shuffle option that automatically changes the photos on your lock screen.

One feature we hoped to see adding to Apple was always the display on. This is something that almost all Android phones have; even the Apple Watch does. He hopes to come out with an iPhone 14.

iOS 16 adds a feature that developers can use called Live Activities. This is essentially a mini view of real-time progress on a workout, sporting event or trip with Uber from your iPhone’s lock screen.

Apple

Live notifications and activities

Sometimes notifications can obscure the photo of your lock screen, so iOS 16 moves notifications to the bottom of the display. As you get them, instead of being compiled into a list, they look like a vertical carousel. Not only does this look better, but it should be a great help to use your iPhone with one hand.

iOS 16 also aims to solve another notification issue. Sometimes you get a bunch of notifications in a row from one app as a result of a basketball game. A new developer tool called Live Activities makes it easier to watch things happen in real time from your lock screen instead of getting a series of interruptions.

Live activities should make it easier to keep track of sporting events, workouts or even the progress of your Uber trip.

Wallet and Apple Pay later

Multi-state ID cards will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So instead of showing your exact date of birth, the Wallet app will show your ID number and that you are over 21 years old.

iOS 16 makes it easy to share keys with apps like Mail and Messages. When your friend receives the key, he can add it to the Wallet app on his iPhone. Apple said it is working to ensure that shared keys are industry standard and free for others.

The Wallet app in iOS 16 gets a bunch of small but remarkable updates, including the Apple Pay Later payment plan.

Apple

Apple Pay will support new types of payments and adds a new feature called Apple Pay Later, a service similar to Klarna that allows you to divide the cost of buying Apple Pay into four equal payments, spread over six weeks, with zero interest and no fees . Upcoming payments are managed through the Wallet app, which makes it easy to keep track of dates and payments.

But Apple Pay doesn’t stop there. A new feature will also help you track Apple Pay orders and allow merchants to deliver detailed receipts and tracking information. This should make it easier for you to stay up to date with all your orders.

You can touch and hold the subject of a photo and separate it from the background. You can then drag it to another app like Messages to share it.

Apple

Tap and drag a visual photo search

The iOS 15 Visual Look Up analyzes your photos and can identify objects such as plants, landmarks and pets. iOS 16 takes this to the next level. When you touch a photo object like the dog in the image above, you can pick it up from the background and add it to apps like Messages. In essence, it is a touch and hold tool that removes the background of a photo.

Apple sometimes goes too far with the word “magic”, but this feature really looks like that.

During the keynote address for WWDC, Apple CEO Craig Federigi introduced SharePlay to the Messages app.

Apple

SharePlay comes in Messaging

SharePlay, which debuted in iOS 15, allows you to have a shared experience while connecting with someone through FaceTime. You can watch TV shows, listen to music in sync and more. iOS 16 adds the ability to discover more apps that support SharePlay from FaceTime.

But perhaps one of the coolest things Apple did for SharePlay was make it work in the Messages app. Apple said this is one of the biggest demands from application developers. Now that you want to share a movie on Disney Plus, you can start SharePlay with a friend while chatting on Messages.

Security Check allows you to quickly reset location sharing and password access. It is designed to be useful for people in violent relationships.

Security screening is a new feature designed to be useful to people in violent relationships. Allows you to view and reset who has access to location information, as well as passwords, messages, and other iPhone apps.

Focus mode updates and focus filters

Focus mode receives several updates. The first applies the behavior of the focus to widgets and the appearance of the lock screen. So you can set one lock screen when your work focus is activated and another for workouts.

Apple has added specific focus filters that apply your iPhone’s focus mode to applications. For example, in Safari, you can restrict which tabs are displayed depending on which focus mode you have activated.

Apple Maps adds public transport maps

The maps will receive several updates. You will be able to plan trips with up to 15 different stops along the way. If you start planning a trip with the Maps app on your Mac, you’ll be able to share it on your iPhone.
