Unexploded ordnance found in the first two nations in Manitoba

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has confirmed that unexploded ordnance (UXO) was recently discovered in the first two nations in Manitoba.

According to a CAF spokesman, the 17 Wing Winnipeg Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was notified of an ammunition sighting at the Black River First Nation on Saturday. CTV News Winnipeg has learned that the device was found on the beach.

The next day, team members discovered two items – one at Black River First Nation and another at Fort Alexander First Nation.

The CAF noted that both UXOs were safely transported to the 17 Wing EOD disposal site, where they were destroyed.

The spokesman explained that these UXOs were airborne location markers, called Marines (MLMs), used for search and rescue operations over water.

These markers are ejected from search and rescue aircraft when something interesting is found in the water. The marker ignites on contact with water, allowing the CAF to return to this exact location if necessary.

Location of the marker The Marines emit thick, off-white smoke that can be seen from the plane. Smoke is generated by a flame that is visible at night.

So far in 2022, the CAF has responded 94 times for the restoration and destruction of 322 UXOs – 32 of which were Marines. The CAF added that it has staff ready at the moment to deal with such situations.

The spokesman added that UXO could continue to pose a threat even after fulfilling its purpose. People who come across this type of device are reminded not to pick it up or move it, but instead contact the local police.
