BRAZIL: Brazil has confirmed its first case of monkeypox in a 41-year-old man traveling to Europe, the health ministry said on Thursday. Monkeypox is a rare disease, usually limited to West and Central Africa. It is related but less severe than smallpox, causing a rash that spreads, fever, chills and pain, among other symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already registered nearly 1,000 cases of the disease in 29 countries where it is not endemic. Most of them are found in Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Portugal and Spain. The first infected Brazilian traveled to Spain and Portugal, according to a statement from the health ministry. He is hospitalized for treatment and is in “good condition”, the statement said, adding that his close contacts are under surveillance. Brazil is the third country in Latin America to report monkeypox after Argentina and Mexico. So far, the WHO says no deaths have been reported in countries where monkeypox is not endemic.
