COVID-19 Ontario: Reducing hospitalizations is slowing

Recent reductions in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Ontario appear to be slowing, according to new data released on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Health, 512 people in hospital tested positive for COVID-19, down 2.7% from last Tuesday. In context, a week earlier, COVID-19 hospitalizations had fallen from 808 to 526, down 34.9 percent.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s wastewater data is starting to rise after a steep downward slope began in late April.

Intensive care employment remained stable with six more patients seeking care for the virus the day before, bringing the number to 116.

Forty-three percent of hospitalized patients and 57 percent of people in the intensive care unit who tested positive for COVID-19 received virus care. The other people with a positive test were admitted for other reasons.

Officials report five net new deaths due to COVID just a day after the province did not register additional deaths for the first time since early May.

The province reported 460 new cases of COVID-19, but health officials warned that the number was underestimated due to limited testing.

With 8,385 tests taken in the last 24 hours, Ontario reported a positive test result of 6.9 percent.
