Canmore RCMP received a call around 2:00 p.m. Sunday for a report of a drowning in the Spray Lakes Campground area of Spray Valley Provincial Park. According to RCMP Cpl. Susan Richter, there were four people in a boat on the Spray Lakes Dam when it capsized sometime after 10 a.m.
One of the men on the boat managed to save himself; however, one has been confirmed dead and the other two remain missing.
A search for the two is underway by Kananaskis Emergency Services, Alberta Conservation Officers and the RCMP. Searchers are using boats and a helicopter, as well as other means.
There are also casualty services on the scene, as the wanted man is in severe shock, Richter said.
“One factor in this incident is that it happened in a remote area with no cell phone or radio reception,” Richter said. “It happened around 10 or 11am and emergency crews were dispatched at 2pm and it doesn’t appear there were people around to help.”
The reservoir is about 25 kilometers south of Canmore.
Emergency crews planned to search for the two missing men until the evening. The RCMP underwater dive team will be consulted Monday morning if the two are not found by then.
Information about the boat’s occupants was not released Sunday, pending their identification and notification of next of kin, RCMP said in a news release.
