A major incident was declared after Norfolk Fire Service was called to more than 70 calls in one day.

Firefighters are currently battling blazes across the county, most of which were caused by the ongoing heatwave as temperatures soared close to 40C.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said all appliances were “engaged with ongoing incidents or alerted to a state of readiness for incoming calls”.

A spokesman added: “Additional command, control and mobilization measures have been put in place to manage the increased volume of calls and incidents and ensure the best balance of available equipment across the county.

“While the incident is ongoing we need to prioritize resources and ask the public to contact Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service on emergency calls only.”

Fire crews are continuing to tackle the blaze at Snettisham Seaside Park, which started just after 11.30am on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, another open fire led to a major emergency response near Shotsham Road and Leafy Oak Lane in Poringland.

Two houses were also badly damaged after a large fire in School Road, Ashmanhaugh.

Part of the A47 is closed at Hopton, on the Norfolk border, due to a large field fire which started from the Coast Road.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service also declared a major incident after attending 63 incidents so far today.
