A St. John’s city councilor says more resources need to be dedicated to cleaning up downtown after major events.
The Council’s Head of Public Works, Sandy Hickman, was speaking on VOCM OpenLine with Paddy Daly about the clean-up after the Regatta event compared to the George Street Festival.
Hickman congratulated workers and vendors for cleaning up Quidi Vidi Lake, but also addressed the large amount of trash left behind after the George Street Festival.
He says the city has a contract company that starts cleaning at 4:00 a.m. and works its way through downtown. He calls it a resource problem.
He says the city needs to do better by putting more resources into the cleanup, something he has pledged to fight for. He says the company is doing its best, but it’s too much for the number of workers they have. He says the city has received complaints.
