An armed suspect was shot dead by Vancouver police and several people are in hospital with “serious, life-changing injuries” after a machete attack on Granville Street Saturday night.

The suspect attacked four people at a residence in the 900 block of Granville near Smithe Street, in the heart of the entertainment district, around 10 p.m.

Officers were called by the Vancouver Fire Department after a man set fire to his apartment in the lodging house.

He then “attacked and stabbed four people in their building,” said VPD spokeswoman Const. Tanya Visintin in an update on the incident on Sunday.

“When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect who was still armed with the weapon. Police fired shots and the suspect was wounded.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, while the four victims of the machete attack were also hospitalized with serious, life-altering injuries, Visintin said.

While the lodge was next to the Roxy nightclub, management posted a message on social media saying it had nothing to do with Roxy staff or patrons. However, the club will be closed on Sunday evening.

Patrons praised Roxy staff for getting everyone out safely after violence broke out outside.

The VPD’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating, as is British Columbia’s Independent Investigative Office (IIO), which looks into police incidents that result in serious injury or death.

Police and the IIO are appealing for witnesses or people with dashcam or video footage to contact them.
