Several people were injured, but Calgary police said an incident in which a truck drove through a restaurant window will not lead to charges.
Emergency crews were called to the area of 31 Street and 34 Avenue SE around 10:15 p.m. for reports of a crash.
Upon arrival they found a truck had gone through the front window of Sammy’s Chophouse and landed completely inside the business.
Courtney Daly was sitting inside when the truck crashed into the restaurant.
“I looked up and saw a black truck flying towards the window. I told my friends to ‘look out’ and then he was on top of us – he came in through the window.”
She calls it “the most horrible experience” she’s had in her life.
Daly added that the pub was occupied at the time of the crash.
“I’m surprised nobody died.
“I just heard glass breaking and then I couldn’t breathe,” said Katherine Dawson, who said she was the first person hit.
“I was on my hands and knees and I was crawling – I guess I was crawling out from under the vehicle and I couldn’t breathe.
“I didn’t know what was wrong with me – I looked at my friend and she was injured. I looked at my other friend and her head was hanging in the booth and I didn’t know if she was okay or not.”
EMS told CTV News that four people were taken to the hospital in connection with the incident and several people were treated at the scene.
Victims include:
- Elderly woman in stable, non-life-threatening condition taken to Foothills Medical Center;
- An elderly woman was taken to Foothills Medical Center in serious but stable condition;
- An elderly man in a stable, non-life-threatening condition was taken to the Peter Lougheed Centre; and
- An elderly woman was taken to South Health Campus in stable, non-life-threatening condition.
Calgary police say the incident is under investigation, but the incident is not believed to be criminal.
