BALTIMORE — In this exclusive video, Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES, FADCES, talking to Sherita Hill Golden, MD, MHS, on the historical drivers of health care disparities in diabetes and obesity and specific actions providers can take today.
Weiner is the owner and clinical director of Susan Weiner Nutrition, PLLC, in North Bellmore, New York, Endocrine today Member of the editorial board and editor of the column “Diabetes in real life”. Golden is the Hugh P. McCormick Family Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism and vice president and chief diversity officer for the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Health Equity at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
To begin to address disparities in diabetes and other conditions, the health care system must gain the trust of minority patient groups, Golden said. She describes lessons from COVID-19 testing that can be applied to diabetes care and suggests specific actions providers can take to begin addressing disparities in their own practice as well as broader public political initiatives.
