“We’re really excited to be able to work with him,” was Jurgen Klopp’s immediate reaction to the news that Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, subject to his work permit.

The forward will officially join the Reds at the start of the January transfer window after successfully passing a medical and agreeing personal terms at the AXA training center on Wednesday.

Gakpo arrives at Anfield on the back of an impressive World Cup performance for the Netherlands, during which he scored three goals in five appearances for his country.

And while Klopp is confident he can make an immediate impact at his new club, the manager believes there is much more to come from Liverpool’s new No.18 at the age of just 23.

The boss told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s really great news for us that we’ve been able to do it and I have to say it’s been a fantastic job from everyone involved, especially Julian [Ward].

“The work that went into this was really impressive and we ended up signing a player who we’ve known for quite some time and who we believe will have a really bright future with us.

Cody Gakpo: The First Interview

“There’s a lot to like about Cody. He is still only 23 years old, but he already has a lot of experience.

“He was the captain of PSV, he was the Dutch Player of the Year last season and, as many people have just seen, he also had a great World Cup with his national team.

“So clearly he’s already a really, really good player, but his age also means he has the potential to get even better.

“Offensively, he’s very versatile and we also know he’s a smart football player and a smart person, so we’re really excited to be able to work with him.”
