SUDBURY—Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) is reminding the public to take precautions to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses this holiday season. Influenza activity started unusually early in the area this year, and the number of confirmed flu cases so far this season has exceeded the number of cases reported in the entire flu season for more than 20 years.
“The first case of influenza was confirmed in late October in our service area, which is at least two months earlier than in recent years,” said Dr. Imran Adrian Khan, a public health physician with PHSD. “As of December 16, we have received reports of 300 laboratory-confirmed local cases of influenza.”
Influenza A is currently the only type of influenza virus circulating locally that has been identified through testing.
In addition to the high number of influenza infections, the district continues to experience ongoing transmission and illness from COVID-19.
Public Health is reminding everyone to follow simple precautions to limit the spread of respiratory illnesses to protect themselves and others during the holidays and winter season.
These include up-to-date information on COVID-19 and flu vaccinations by visiting a local pharmacy or making an appointment through public health or your healthcare provider to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine, like the COVID-19 vaccine, is safe and effective; wearing a well-fitting mask when indoors or in crowded places; covering the cough or sneeze with the upper sleeve or handkerchief; washing your hands often or using hand sanitizer, especially after you’ve been in contact with other people or in a shared or public space; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands to prevent germs from entering your body; cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs and light switches; staying at home when sick; stay away from sick people and check your COVID-19 Risk Index and Respiratory Activity Report regularly to understand your level of risk.
