A TTC worker saves the baby’s life

A transit supervisor was recognized by the board and executive director of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) for saving a baby’s life on Monday.

At the Jan. 19 TTC board meeting, CEO Rick Leary called on chief operations officer Ben Kirton to be recognized for his “heroic” efforts to save the life of a 15-month-old baby who was choking.

“Ben is an operations manager who has been with the TTC for six years,” Leary said. “Last Monday, Ben responded to an emergency alarm on a train at Coxwell Station.”

Leary said Curton arrived to find the baby suffocating and suffering.

“When I arrive [the] scene, Ben immediately used his experience as a paramedic and began emergency first aid procedures.

“His quick work resulted in the object being cleared from the child’s airway and when emergency services arrived they confirmed that Ben’s actions were life-saving,” he continued, adding that Ben’s efforts were “heroic” in nature.

On Twitter, TTC media relations representatives said this incident was “just one example of outstanding and incredible work [TTC] employees do every day.’
